Actor Shia LaBeouf, who portrayed the character of Sam Witwicky in the first three Transformers films, took a fresh aim at the Transformers movie franchise in a recent interview with Esquire. He reportedly shared his distaste for the franchise.
LaBeouf started out by admitting that he cannot put down those who brought him into the franchise, Michael Bay, and Steven Spielberg.
“Michael and Steven did a lot for me.” LaBeouf said. “I’m not going to pooh-pooh those dudes anymore.”
He went on to slam the Transformer films by calling them irrelevant.
“My hang-up with those films was that they felt irrelevant,” the actor revealed. “They felt dated as f**k… You come up on these stories about Easy Rider and Raging Bull and De Niro and Scorsese and Hopper, and you find value in what they do. Meanwhile, you’re chasing energon crystals. It’s very hard to keep doing what you’re doing when you feel like it’s the antithesis of your purpose on this planet.”
The Indiana Jones actor said that getting a role in the Transformers franchise at such a young age had a very unusual effect on him as well as on the attitude of those around him.
“[I felt like I was] living in a gilded cage,” LaBeouf added. “No one gives a fuck about your problems. Everybody’s like, ‘Hey, man, you’re riding the wave!’”
Notably, LaBeouf’s character Sam Witwicky was killed off in Transformers: The Last Knight. The actor is not going to reprise his role as Indiana Jones’s son Mutt Williams in Indiana Jones 5 after screenwriter David Koepp said last year that the character is not in the film.
Shia LaBeouf will soon be seen portraying American Tennis Legend John Mcenroe in the sports drama, Borg Vs McEnroe. He stars opposite Swedish star Sverrir Gudnason, who plays McEnroe’s most famous rival, Björn Borg. The movie is set for release on April 13. You can check out the film’s trailer below.
