Last week, toy company Mattel announced that it has decided to venture into the movie-making business with the launch of a brand-new movie studio called Mattel Films. Dallas Buyers Club producer Robbie Brenner is on board to oversee Mattel Films. And surprisingly, it looks like Mattel will also be the studio to come out with a He-Man movie instead of Sony.
Mattel has previously collaborated with other studios to get movies made based on their various properties. But now, the company will make its own films based on its potential properties including the highly popular He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Monster High, and Max Steel.
Sony Pictures had earlier acquired rights from Mattel to make a He-Man Masters of the Universe movie and a Barbie movie. But, as the rights expired last year, Sony is now no longer entitled to use Mattel’s properties in its films. So, it’s quite likely that the projects being developed by Sony will be scrapped, reported Cosmic Book News.
Regarding Sony’s He-Man movie, it was earlier announced that the film studio had tapped in David S. Goyer to write the script and director duo, Aaron and Adam Nee, to helm the film.
In fact, Goyer also shared some He-Man Masters of the Universe movie concept arts on Instagram featuring a Teela battlesuit, various ships, Battlecat and a Masters of the Universe logo. Sony’s He-Man movie even had a December 18, 2019 release date attached. Initially, Goyer was also offered to direct but the Man of Steel writer decided not to helm the movie due to possible conflicts with his other project, Syfy’s Krypton.
As far as Sony’s Barbie movie is concerned, the film studio announced earlier this year that it had pushed the film’s release date from 2018 to 2020. After actress Amy Schumer left the project citing scheduling conflicts, Anne Hathaway was roped in to play the live-action version of the character.
Now that He-Man and Barbie movie rights are back with Mattel and the toy company has launched its own movie studio, fans of both toy lines will have to wait a little longer to see their favorite toy figures come to life.
