The Tom Hardy starrer Venom performed unexpectedly well and its staggering box office success immediately paved way for a sequel film. Now, new reports suggest Sony is finally moving forward with Venom 2 as the studio has already finalized a writer for the antihero adventure sequel.
According to a report coming from Variety, the studio has roped in Kelly Marcel, one of the three credited screenwriters on the first film, to pen the script for Venom 2. Marcel was brought in at the last minute to do rewrites on the first installment.
As per the report, citing sources close to the negotiation, Sony has made a big deal with Marcel to return for Venom 2, though a specific figure was not disclosed. She will be the head writer this time around and also serve as an executive producer. Marcel’s previous credits include Fifty Shades of Grey, the Fox sci-fi show Terra Nova, and Disney’s Mary Poppins drama, Saving Mr. Banks. She has also helped write the script for Disney’s Cruella starring Emma Stone.
While there’s no word on what the sequel will entail, it is expected to focus on Eddie Brock/Venom (Tom Hardy) showdown with Cletus Kasady/Carnage (Woody Harrelson) as teased in the first film’s mid-credits scene. Michelle Williams is also like to make a return as Anne Weying.
As far as the sequel’s director is concerned, the chances of Ruben Fleischer returning for the Venom 2 seems bleak as he is currently attached to Sony’s Zombieland sequel film, which is set to come out later this year. The Variety report asserts that the studio might look for a new filmmaker this time. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are all likely to return as producers.
Venom 2 doesn’t have a release date attached yet. However, it is expected that the film might get a late 2020 release window.
Venom is currently available on digital HD and Blu-ray.
