Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse producer teases “Indian comic-book look” & Spider-Man 2099’s world, exploring Spider-Gwen & Miles Morales romance & more

Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) will return in the forthcoming 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse but what can be expected from the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse follow-up? Producers and writers Phil Lord and Chris Miller offered a 15-minute dive into their frenetic comic and pop and inspired art style world-building during CinemaCon 2022 and now, the duo creators have provided more information on their two-part story sequel, such as exploring a never before seen parallel universe based on an Indian comic-book look.

The long haul for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse is coming to an end, the second installment was originally scheduled to release in 2022 – but listening to Lord and Miller discuss the project assures the wait was worth it. In fact, “This movie has six” animation styles, unlike the first film, as Lord stated in Empire’s latest print issue.

While Sony Pictures did not release the extended clip for worldwide viewing, the first trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse assured it will follow in the first film’s footsteps by making it an exhilarating pop-art motion-smearing visual treat. In addition, the first look confirmed Miles going through the multiverse as he phased through multiple universes, one of them being the Earth where Spider-Man is in India.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will also explore Spider-Man 2099’s futuristic world called Nueva York

Fans instantly presumed it was the Earth where Pavitr Prabhakar was Spider-Man, due to hints of Hindi and Tamil texts from India being shown in the trailer. Fortunately, that guess was indeed right as Miller said,” Well, the two that you saw in the teaser trailer were what’s called Earth-50101, which we’re calling ‘Mumbattan’ — that’s based on an Indian comic-book.”

He further explained Spider-Man 2099 a.k.a Miguel O’Hara’s world, which will be called Nueva York is “based on Syd Mead-style illustrations of what the future might look like.” Moreover, Spider-Gwen’s home world, ‘which is Earth-65. And that has a watercolour-wash style that’s reminiscent of the covers of her comic books.”

Interestingly, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse won’t just center over Morales rather the movie “opens in Gwen’s world” reveals Miller. And as expected, she faces her own hurdles, like dealing with her father whilst also fighting Vulture. Speaking of whom, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 seems to further explore the romantic spark between Gwen and Morales from the original 2018 film.

“There’s tension between the romantic possibilities for her and Miles, and their desire to keep their friendship intact, and not to risk it,” said Lord. “That’s a really interesting place for two characters to be, especially when they’re so young.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse releases on June 2, 2023.
