Spider-Man: Lotus fan film premiere has internet recalling it’s lead actor & director’s racist remarks, backlash ensues: ‘Klu Klux Karpet’

A fan-made Marvel movie titled Spider-Man: Lotus was the topic of interest & controversy in June 2022. A year later, the project has finally come to fruition with its premiere event held on August 5, in LA. However, Spidey fans who supported the project since its early days have not forgotten the racial remarks from the fan film director Gavin Konop and titular actor Wayne Warden.

While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 has been thrown off course due to the double strike by WGA & SAG-AFTRA – fans in tune with Pop Culture are aware of another Spider-Man project but not from Marvel Studios. Spider-Man: Lotus is arguably the biggest fan-led feature backed by fans. But after a series of controversies stemming from the creators behind it, it’s sadly only being remembered for the backlash it continues to receive from fans & financial backers.

Unfortunately for the cast & crew behind Spider-Man: Lotus – reactions to the premiere are filled with criticism and mockery-ish memes reminding the director and actor of their alleged N-word remarks. Even so, some are still supportive of the initiative in favor of the other artists that were unfairly impacted by the controversy.

Going by Gavin’s video clips on X/Twitter, the director remains Unwavering by the backlash. Video clips shared by Konop show a large crowd gathered to attend the premiere. Even so, critics have not let his past behavior slide.

For those unaware, the not-for-profit fan film gained popularity when the first teaser showed promise with even Jon Watts praising the director. However, its first hurdle came from Wayne Warden, the actor portraying Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Lotus – who was caught in 4K using the N-word. Several screencaps were shared through an anonymous Twitter account.

Warden Wayne was quick to offer an apology but the events that transpired after his statement was a shocking twist. Spider-Man: Lotus director Gavin Konop was also guilty of using the N-word as well as the R-word, as revealed through screenshots by a now-deleted post.

While both the director and the main lead were sincere in their apology – it was clear the damage was done as the VFX team quit. Furthermore, sequences involving CGI were leaked by the team to show off their work without aligning with Lotus.

It was only in September that Konop resurfaced to confirm Spider-Man: Lotus would be released. However, several backers have demanded their names to be removed from the credits along with a refund.

Spider-Man: Lotus features two villains namely the Green Goblin and The Shocker. Other well-known characters such as Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy are also included. Another shocking addition appears to be Miles Morales according to chatters on social media.

Spider-Man: Lotus will be available to stream via Youtube for free from August 10.
