The day has finally arrived to discuss spoilers from Spider-Man: No Way Home, turn away now unless this is your cup of tea. As seen in numerous teasers and trailers for the Columbia Pictures produced Marvel-based threequel flick, Tom Holland’s spidey is on a mission to undo his identity expose caused by Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) from Spider-Man: Far From Home, though not without the help of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), the Sorcerer Supreme or is he?
When Peter Parker pays a visit to The Sanctum Sanctorum, Spider-Man: No Way Home quickly reveals the fact Strange is no longer the Sorcerer Supreme and that title is currently carried on by Benedict Wong’s Wong. Yes, there’s a new Sorcerer Supreme in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In all fairness, Wong did get it as a technicality since “Stephen” was one of the blip victims and only returned after 5 years of passing. So someone had to take care of The Sanctum Sanctorum and Kamar Taj. But even with Strange’s return, Wong continues to carry on the title and tend to the daily requirements of the world of the mystics.
Wong last appeared in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in a brief cameo role. The sorcerer fights Abomination from the Incredible Hulk in a cage match. While it seemed like a fan-service moment, it does play along with No Way Home’s reveal and could explain Wong’s appearance at the end of Shang-Chi to inspect the Ten Rings but more on that later.
Wong makes a quick exit in Spider-Man: No Way Home yet the character has a prominent role in the upcoming Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness. Let’s not forget Wong did advise against Strange using a spell that tampers with the universe.
Hopefully, the sequel offers some more action sequences involving the new Sorcerer Supreme when Doctor Strange 2 lands in theatres on 6 May 2022.
