Star Wars: The Last Jedi actress Kelly Marie Tran aka Loan deactivated her social media accounts back in June after online trollers targeted her with racist and sexist tweets due to their dislike for her character, Rose Tico. Being a newcomer, the actress was subjected to the most amount of abuse in the aftermath of the film.
The 29-year-old actress went on to pen an editorial for The New York Times in which she opened up about the online harassment that she faced after the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In her NY Times essay, Tran she revealed that she didn’t remove her social media accounts because of the comments themselves, but because she started believing each and every word she was reading online.
Many of her Star Wars colleagues including veteran actor Mark Hamill, John Boyega and Rian Johnson came forward in her support.
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the Toronto International Film Festival, while promoting Sorry for Your Loss, when Tran was asked if she would return to social media, she said she is in doubt if she will ever make a return.
“I think that there are, just like anything else, really good and really bad things that come with anything,” Tran said about her experience with harassment. “I felt like I wanted to write something that was honest, that truly came from me, and I don’t know if I’ll ever go back.”
The University of Rochester Professor Bethany Lacina recently conducted a study on the use of derogatory, offensive, and hate language by social media users. In her study, she found that 12 percent of tweets targeted at Tran or her Star Wars: The Last Jedi character Rose contained abusive language and hate speech.
Kelly Marie Tran will next appear together in Star Wars: Episode IX, which is scheduled to arrive in theatres in December of 2019.
