Stranger Things’ David Harbour will soon be seen playing the role of a powerful demon, Hellboy, in director Neil Marshall’s upcoming reboot movie titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. The long-running comic series has already been adapted in two films- 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
Harbour’s portrayal of Police Chief Jim Hopper in Netflix’s hit sci-fi series Stranger Things gave him all the limelight he deserved. The actor even received the Critics’ Choice Television Award this year for the role.
During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Harbour opened up about his new role as Hellboy.
“It’s a classically complicated hero,” the Stranger Things actor said. “He’s a creature that was meant to bring about the end of the world, and he just sorts of wants to be a good guy. He’s got that complexity to him. He’s also a monster who lives among human beings, so he’s in a sense fighting for human beings against his fellow monsters, and yet the humans hate him because they fear him and they think he’s weird looking and everything.”
Harbour went on to compare the monster hunter to his Stranger Things character Jim Hopper. He said that both the characters share a similar core as both are trying to be good guys in their own way.
“Yeah, he’s terrifying!” Harbour said about Hellboy. “There’s that question of, why am I fighting this battle? Just because of some sense of justice, or some sense of good? It’s a really interesting question that sort of is at the core of him, that he struggles with . . . I know that [writer] [Mike] Mignola and [director] Neil [Marshall] and [producer] Lloyd [Levin] all watched Stranger Things and saw that in what I did there, which is similar. He has a heart that’s really good and with a lot of this crusted-over stuff. What I’m dealing with in Hellboy is a lot different, bigger in a certain way. It’s very Shakespearean. It’s demons and witches and stuff like that. But it has a similar core to a dude who’s trapped in horrible circumstances who’s just trying to be a good guy.”
Co-written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola, Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen will see Hellboy battle against a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy mankind. The film also stars Milla Jovovich as Nimue the Blood Queen, Ian McShane as Professor Broom, Penelope Mitchell as Ganeida, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, and Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimi.
Stranger Things season three will premiere in the summer of 2019, while Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is currently scheduled to release on January 11, 2019.
