If a new rumor is to be believed, DC and Warner Bros. have decided to delay Suicide Squad 2 in favor of Harley Quinn-led Birds of Prey movie. Suicide Squad 2 was originally scheduled to begin shooting this fall, but Variety reporter Justin Kroll claims that the Suicide Squad sequel will start filming in 2019 now.
“As for SUICIDE SQUAD 2, clearly moving out of 2018 shoot. The move to go with BOP not only had a lot to do with Hodson’s script but also the idea of doing with BATGIRL what Marvel did with Black Panther in CIVIL WAR by introducing them into universe before giving them own film,” Kroll’s Twitter post read.
According to Kroll, DC Films has decided to line up Suicide Squad 2 behind Birds of Prey in its production schedule so that it can introduce the Batgirl character to audiences in the team-up movie before rolling out her solo film. So, basically, DC wants to introduce Batgirl in Birds of Prey in the same way as it introduced Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and how Marvel Studios introduced Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War before churning out the character ’s massive solo blockbuster film.
It recently came to light that Warner Bros. has roped in Cathy Yan to direct the Birds of Prey project from a script compiled by Christina Hodson who was also been hired to write the script for the upcoming Batgirl movie.
Notably, Yan has become the second female director to direct a DC movie, after Wonder Woman‘s Patty Jenkins. It is rumored that Birds of Prey could be WB’s attempt to make an all-female superhero team-up movie. Margot Robbie will be seen reprising her role of Harley Quinn in the upcoming film. Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2 is expected to begin filming in 2019, with an estimated 2020 release.
