Suicide Squad director David Ayer expressed his disappointment and regret on deciding not to make Joker the main villain of the movie.
Suicide Squad, that hit the theaters in August 2016, is the third film to come out in DC’s Extended Universe. Critics even hailed it as the weakest DCEU’s film to be released ever. Even though the film received major criticism, Suicide Squad managed to fetch $745 million, as per Screenrant.
What went against the film was mainly the villain Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress apart from inconsistent and choppy editing. The trailers released before the film’s release hinted at Jared Leto’s Joker having a chunky role to play in the film. However, when the film actually hit the theaters, fans were disappointed to find that the film’s villain was Cara Delevinge’s Enchantress and not the Joker. Leto had later mentioned that quite a few of his scenes were cut and did not make it to the final movie.
All this would have taken place because of the sweeping changes that were made during the post-production stage of the film.
In a reply to one fan about a BTS image of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, David Ayer said, “There’s maybe a few minutes shot with Jared. There are not endless Joker scenes under guard somewhere. Sorry.” A little later, the Bright director opened up a little more as one fan posted, “It was better than BVS. Joker should have been the Villian. Throw in Riddler like Assault on Arkham from the Animated Universe.” Ayer in response agreed and tweeted, “Believe me. I agonize over this. Yes. Joker should have been main bad guy.”
This is not the first time that the director has expressed his regret of not making the Joker the main villain. Earlier this year, Ayer had said that if he had a time machine, he would have gone back to make Suicide Squad into a more grounded story and added that he would have featured Leto’s Joker as the villain.
Even though Suicide Squad was David Ayer’s first go-around in the DCEU, he will have another chance in the Gotham City Sirens project. This Suicide Squad spinoff was confirmed to be in development in August 2017.
