The Batman: Matt Reeves was surprised to see Colin Farrell in prosthetic make-up as The Penguin

Aside from Robert Pattinson‘s transformation to play DC’s caped crusader role in The Batman, other cast members particularly Colin Farrell chose a different route (i.e. prosthetics) to bring his antagonist character to life. Nevertheless, Director Matt Reeves is all praises over the Irish actor’s performance, so good that he never got to know Farrell due to the star remaining in character throughout filming.

Promos for The Batman movie are surfacing on social media left and right as the DC film emerges on top of fandom’s watchlist for 2022. Added, the ongoing press has snippets of details from The Batman’s behind-the-scenes moments coming to light. In an interview with Empire for March 2022 issue, Reeves spoke in detail on what made him choose Farrell to portray as Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a The Penguin.

Colin Farrell denied putting on weight for The Penguin role

Reeves was initially inspired by Farrell’s transformation in The North Water, for which the actor had put on some serious weight, as the Empire report states. However, the star declined to keep on the extra pounds. Instead, new cheeks, a nose, dental veneers, a neck-piece and a bodysuit turned the actor into the villainous Oz. The Batman director was adamant that Farell’s talent as an actor would not be compromised.

“It can’t interfere with the emotion; I didn’t want a mask,” he recalls telling his prosthetic make-up designer Mike Marino. The results surprised him:”It was so much further than I had imagined. I just felt like coming off that sculpture was this radiating character,” Reeves says. “I actually don’t know Colin as much as I know Oz, because he almost always spoke in character, and that’s the way he looked.”

The Pattinson starer The Batman film has cinephiles excited for Reeves’ “definitive” gritty version of the Dark Knight and DC’s Gotham City. Added, The DC film’s main cast screams A-lister talent all over and Colin Farrell’s performance certainly seems like a treat to experience.

Farrell reportedly already has another gig lined up as The Penguin, with reports stating his villain character will return for a spinoff project in the works at HBO Max.

The Batman will arrive in theaters on March 4 and on April 19 on HBO Max.
