The critics have given their verdict for The Flash movie at CinemaCon 2023. From praises for Ezra Miller for portraying two Barry Allens to critics making comparisons to Back to the Future for its impressive multiverse time-travel plot and heart – the DCU movie seems to hit all the notes. With social media embargo up, early reactions have rolled out for Andy Muschietti‘s DC Film so here’s what the audiences had to say.
CinemaCon is on a roll as The Flash movie receives a positive wave of reactions on the likes of Top Gun Maverick‘s response from last year’s event. An unfinished cut of The Flash movie was shown on Day 2 of the theater industry event, as noted by journalist Perri Nemiroff & others.
Prior to the screening, WBD’s CEO David Zaslav told audiences at CinemaCon that he has seen The Flash three times. “It’s a very emotional movie. You’re going to go through all the emotions. To me, it’s the best superhero movie I’ve ever seen,” he said as stated by The Flash Film News.
Critics on the other hand have assured The Flash lives up to the hype with some comparing it to Superman 78 and Batman 89 which stand as the most acclaimed DC Film titles. One reporter, Germain Lussier described the movie as “It’s Back to the Future meets Spider-Man: No Way Home” referencing the humor and heart it delivers whilst also packed with action and surprises.
The Flash movie gets praised as the funniest DC movie & best CBM of the year
Several other CinemaCon attendees also echoed that statement but went as far as calling it the “greatest DC movie of the last 30 years,” as Umberto Gonzalez puts it – though not considering Christopher Nolan movies. While some are stretching it by saying, “is truly one of the best superhero movies ever,” as Matt Ramos notes.
DC’s #TheFlash is TREMENDOUS! Forget DC, it is without a doubt among the best superhero films ever made. An all-timer. Inventive storytelling, FANTASTIC action sequences, great cast. SO MANY nerdy details. I’m in tears at the end. Everything you want from a superhero film & more pic.twitter.com/xYSn0zuXMm

I’m honestly floored it’s this good. As a monster BACK TO THE FUTURE fan, it has BTTF vibes all day. Michael Keaton is amazing, as expected, and this is the best Ezra Miller has been as Flash. Affleck gets some of his best Batman moments, too, and Sasha Calle rocks! #TheFlash pic.twitter.com/1cfyamTg9M

#TheFlash was INCREDIBLE. Full of heroes, heart, humor & HOPE. I cried SEVERAL times. Wow. I can’t even believe some of what I saw on the big screen. Y’all are in for a treat!!! #CinemaCon #CinemaCon2023 🦇💜 pic.twitter.com/ex35sKGZPm

THE FLASH is awesome! One of the very best DC movies, a perfect blend of action, heart & humor! So many WOW & chill-inducing moments that longtime DC fans will love! EZRA MILLER is superb (twice, actually!) & MICHAEL KEATON’s still got it! #TheFLASH #BATMAN #CinemaCon pic.twitter.com/mYJrz7YUZG

I'm sorry for ever doubting this movie
I'm still can't process what I've just witnessed#TheFlash might be the best CBM this year https://t.co/b02I2jM0YV

BELIEVE THE HYPE! Christopher Nolan movies aside, #TheFlashMovie is the GREATEST DC movie of the last 30 years that belongs in the same conversation as SUPERMAN 78 and BATMAN 89. The movie breaks incredible new ground in superhero cinema & honors DC lore of years past. #TheFlash pic.twitter.com/zGkhpfjlsl

Flash is the DC movies fans have been waiting for. It does so many unbelievable things that you need to see it to believe it. But also on the biggest screen possible. pic.twitter.com/rKqNpLulTv

Yup. #TheFlash is as good as rumored. It’s Back to the Future meets Spider-Man: No Way Home with all the humor & heart of the former and action and surprises of the latter. If anything, it might be a tad too ambitious but it’s also just incredibly satisfying, heartwarming & fun. pic.twitter.com/Yysb9mjiAm

this is truly one of the best superhero movies ever. believe the hype. oh my god. #TheFlash

Caught an unfinished cut of #TheFlash and dug it quite a bit! Especially how the narrative challenges Barry to confront who he is, who he could have become, and how one’s influenced by the people in (or not in) their life.
It’s a successful mix of heartfelt coming-of-age… pic.twitter.com/CB7mTDEZXC

Damn, #TheFlash is good! It’s super inventive both visually and in concept. The dynamic of two Barry Allen’s is crazy well done.
Emotions hit me intensely hard, solid surprises, and it got me wanting to watch again and really eager to see how they follow it. Well done. pic.twitter.com/7QqiHVNAJy

The Flash is hands down one of the best superhero films of all time. No joke, The Flash is the ultimate movie going experience as it has a little bit of everything! Action, emotion, heart, humor and plenty of nostalgia. Ezra Miller is phenomenal as dual Barry Allens. Michael… pic.twitter.com/F7SHA30vZM

Just out of #TheFlash at CinemaCon. Believe the hype folks – truly one of the great superhero movies. Ezra Miller (x2), Sasha Calle and MICHAEL KEATON. It’s pretty perfect and one of the best films of this type you could ever hope to see.

THE FLASH: First hr is pretty fantastic. Strikes the perfect tone. Ezra is great. Heroic. Funny. Emotional. The last hr is MOSTLY terrible. Just an utter mess that’ll leave you asking, “what the HELL is going on?” Fan service & DC villain problem strike again. Mixed bag overall.

Yeah, #TheFlash is legit great! It delivers some notably thrilling, fun and creative moments I felt I hadn’t seen in a million other superhero movies. It had me smiling from the Warner Bros. logo at the top and I even dug stuff inspired by movies I wasn’t into. pic.twitter.com/B5vFyFBBcl

Just watched #TheFlash at CinemaCon. It has some stuff in it you will not believe and it showcases much more of Barry Allen’s powers. It is indeed one of DC’s best and fits nicely as a bridge story between the old and new DCEU franchises. It’s also the funniest DC movie. pic.twitter.com/uDepMKVVG1
— Rob Keyes (@rob_keyes) April 26, 2023
#TheFlash is fantastic. I know Ezra Miller has made a lot of mistakes but they are soooooo good in this movie. Loved Keaton, the action, humor and emotion. Andy Muschietti has crafted something special. Thumbs way up.
WB didn’t show the after the credits scenes. pic.twitter.com/J8KsdrKVwz

#TheFlash is massively entertaining! Extraordinarily funny, but still has solid emotional stakes. It’s one of the better multiverse movies out there.
Tons of fun surprises. A genuinely superb superhero movie – one of the best in a long time! Very, very satisfying. #CinemaCon pic.twitter.com/zRa1Xzl79l

Guys. Here to say it’s not hype. THE FLASH destroys expectations and at the same times mends all bridges. Lightning in a bottle. And as great as Keaton is…Ezra is even better.

I got to watch an unfinished cut of #TheFlash! 🧵
It’s an unabashedly comic book movie & a loving homage to DC film history. For a film that resets the #DCU, it also does a great job of closing the circle.
Michael Keaton’s return as #Batman is simply…PERFECT. pic.twitter.com/xlufy9CzrG

#TheFlash is excellent! The film does a good job balancing The Multiverse, Time-Travel, & its main characters. The multiple Barry’s are handled w/ finesse. Seeing Michael Keaton as #Batman again made me feel like a kid again, loved @SashaCalle’s #Supergirl & some cool surprises! pic.twitter.com/eCrALUDeKv
— Joseph Deckelmeier (@joedeckelmeier) April 26, 2023
Nostalgic. HILARIOUS. With tons of heart and two outstanding performances by Ezra Miller. I honestly can’t believe #TheFlash actually exists. It’s magical. It presses every button. I’ll see it 1,000 times. pic.twitter.com/hhT6dXz6PO
— Sean O'Connell (@Sean_OConnell) April 26, 2023
Ezra Miller’s performance has also gotten praise, pointing out the actor did an outstanding job at playing two Barry Allens. The feature is surprisingly being called the funniest DC movie yet but aside from raving over the humor element – Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, Michael Keaton‘s Batman and Ben Affleck‘s Bat sequences have been commended too.
Even naysayers who doubted The Flash movie’s early buzz have positioned it as the finest DC entry. Others like Collider’s Steven Weintraub had a few words of compliment for director Andy Muschietti stating that he “has crafted something special”.
There were no post-credit scenes shown for The Flash though it’s not clear if the movie will have one for its theatrical release since the feature resets the DCU. Though one important detail to surface from the screening reveals The Flash movie takes place 30 years after the events of 1995’s Batman Returns.
The Flash movie will arrive in theaters on June 16, 2023.
