Shane Black’s action reboot The Predator was expected to dethrone Warner Bros/New Line’s already reigning film, The Nun, at the worldwide box office. But, the same did not happen.
The Predator grossed $24 million in its first three days from more than 4,000 North American theaters and $30.7 million from 72 overseas territories, bringing the global total to $54.7 million. The Nun, on the other hand, stood strong even in its second weekend raking in a total of $33.1 million in 62 overseas markets, taking its international total to $143.6 million. It collected another $18 million in North American for a global total of $228.7 million.
While The Predator topped 25 debuts including Russia which leads at $4.73M, The Nun is No. 1 in 36 hubs. In fact, The Nun is the highest-grossing title in the Conjuring universe in 18 markets including Romania, Spain, Ukraine, and Brazil. It also the top Warner Bros. 2018 movie in 19 territories, reported Deadline.
Notably, The Nun is already making the big buck considering its modest $22 million budget. But, as far as The Predator is concerned, the reboot film still has to a lot to earn to cover up for its comparatively high $88 million budget. The big budget is mainly due to the use of extensive CGI in the film, as well as the salaries of big stars like Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown and Keegan-Michael Key.
The other two releases for the week, A Simple Favor featuring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively and White Boy Rick starring Matthew McConaughey, earned $16 million and $8.8 million respectively.
The Predator picks up after the first two installments which follows a young boy who unknowingly sets off an alert that brings the Predators back to Earth. The film stars Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Jacob Tremblay, Sterling K. Brown, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Jake Busey, and Yvonne Strahovski.
The Predator and The Nun are currently running in theatres.
