The Sandman episode 1 – fans praise casting Tom Sturridge as Morpheus aka Dream, Boyd Holbrook’s Corinthian & show’s comic accurate adaptation, Neil Gaiman reacts

The Sandman episode 1 has Neil Gaiman fans sold on the Netflix adaptation – from introducing Tom Sturridge as Lord Morpheus in the domain of The Dreaming to revealing Boyd Holbrook as Corinthian, the rogue Nightmare that forces Dream to pursue him in the waking world – the premiere episode titled “Sleep of the Just” has long-time comic fans praising the live-action series for its comic accuracy. Below is a highlight of some of the best moments from the debut episode that’s got fans applauding the series for its world-building.

The Sandman episode 1 is quick to introduce viewers to the realm of dreams and nightmares, an exuberant world where the living go during sleep. Although diving into the supernatural can be tricky to follow for newcomers, the first chapter of Sandman simplifies the plot. The all-powerful Dream, touted as a being mightier than the gods falls into Roderick Burgess’s (Charles Dance) trap.  A stroll down to the waking world to punish a rogue nightmare goes horribly wrong after Burgess a.k.a Lord Magu ends up trapping Dream instead of Death, the personification he desired to capture in hopes of bringing back his dead son to life.

Fans of The Sandman comics were impressed by the series’ picture-by-picture accuracy to the source material. Even the binding circle that keeps Dream docile is an exact representation of the comic page. It then leads to Morpheus’ century-long imprisonment that has consequences on the living (what do you expect keeping Dream of the Endless locked up?), a world ravaged by sleepless disease and perpetual sleepwalkers and people unable to wake up from their sleep.

Luckily, the riot of Dreams and Nightmares running amok stops after Morpheus’ escape and his eventual return to his realm. However, Lucienne (Vivienne Acheampong) soon reveals the state of the palace is not as it once was, crumbled and decayed with its residents having abandoned their posts. It sets off Morpheus’ next mission to bring back the dreams and nightmares preying on the waking world. And mainly, finding his three powerful tools, the Pouch of Dream Sand, Dream’s Helm and the Dreamstone ruby.

It looks like Gaiman’s supernatural horror adaptation is off to a good start going by social media reactions to The Sandman episode 1.  Many were excited to see some of the references to the comics, such as the Dream library where every book that was never written can be found and the House of Secrets and the House of Mysteries. Aside from fans, writers and artists from the comic industry are also taking a break from their work life to stream the new series, as did the famed game designer Hideo Kojima. Readers can check out reactions below.

Since its premiere, Sandman has been trending on social media and the rave reactions to the Netflix show have caught Gaiman’s attention as well. The comic book veteran writer was amazed by the responses and got candid, “I’m just so relieved and happy that so many of you like it so much.” The Sandman writer has been quite active on Twitter lately, even reprimanding some of the comic fans for gatekeeping the series for new audiences.

Sandman season 1’s all ten episodes are currently available to stream on Netflix.
