The moment that a lot of fans have been anticipating since The Walking Dead season 9’s second final episode – which showed several fan-favorite characters, beheaded on Alpha’s border spike. The death of the Whisperers’ Alpha was finally delivered in an epic fashion from the hands of Negan in The Walking Dead season 10 episode 12.
At some point, TWD fans may have realized that Negan might not really be interested in getting Alpha’s trust to join the Whisperers. Rather, the opposite – to take out its leader, Alpha. However, there’s more to the Negan’s mysterious redeeming moment than what unraveled in the recent episode.
Did Carol release Negan from his prison to kill Alpha?
The Walking Dead season 10 episode 12 ended with a twist with Negan throwing Alpha’s walker turned head at Carol’s feet. But the bigger surprise came when Carol responds saying, “Took you long enough.”
Her response certainly begs the question if Carol was the mysterious person behind Negan’s escape from Alexandria. Surprisingly, according to The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang – that was indeed the case. Moreover, she clarifies unlike the comics, Negan wasn’t alone on the plan and Carol was involved throughout.
“In the comic, it was what always interested me most about her,” said Kang speaking to THR. “Alpha is cold and brutal as a leader, but her one soft spot is her daughter. We knew from the beginning of mapping out her story that we wanted to tell this arc about a woman who has one shred of humanity she’s holding onto, her daughter, but it’s not a healthy relationship. It’s abusive. The way she goes about her relationship with her daughter is so hardcore, but she has to believe in her heart of hearts that she’s doing it for her child in her own twisted way. We wanted to tell that arc, where her daughter rejects her, and she decides she needs to burn down civilization as a result and make [Lydia] walk with her in a different way.”
Kang added that fans will further get to see the details of the deal that Carol brokered with Negan. But it seems like Carol’s need for revenge could boil down to more than just Alpha. Nonetheless, it looks like Negan will be seen in a different light from this forth.
It can be speculated that he could have done the deed to in fact redeem himself of his past actions and roam free among the people at Alexandria.
“Negan clearly has a deal with Carol, and we’ll explore the nature of that deal and what happens after it,” says Kang. “There are some very cool scenes coming up for Negan with our big characters, which I’m really excited for people to see. And now Carol has gotten her revenge — but revenge is complicated. It’s obviously going to be something that plays out for her. Did it satisfy that itch, or is there something else at the end of this road?”
It will be interesting to see how Negan and Carol’s plan could affect the rest of the TWD characters – especially Daryl. Stay tuned for more updates.
