‘Thor: Ragnarok’- Chris Hemsworth Says New Look Was ‘Hugely Liberating’

The upcoming Thor: Ragnarok has been repeatedly teased to be different from its earlier installments. The recent trailer also revealed the God of Thunder forming his own mini superhero team to battle Hela and stop the goddess of death from destroying Asgard.

It’s no doubt that fans would get to see a whole new Thor in the upcoming movie. For starters, director Taika Waititi went all the way to stripping away the God of Thunder’s signature look and also destroying his hammer, Mjolnir. But surprisingly, the changes seem to have been more helpful for Chris Hemsworth in playing the character.

EW’s recent Fall Movie Preview issue features a piece on Thor: Ragnarok. The article has interviews with Hemsworth and Waititi along with a new photo of Loki [Tom Hiddleston] and Valkyrie [Tessa Thompson] fight each other.

In the article, Hemsworth makes a remark that his new look and hairdo in Thor: Ragnarok was in fact “hugely liberating”. He also adds that it is one of the factors that made it interesting rather than boring.

“When I didn’t have the wig on, I instantly felt like I could move and speak and react differently,” said Hemsworth. “Once we aesthetically stripped a lot of that away, it allowed the whole thing to take on a different attitude. It felt like a completely different character, and that was hugely liberating and freeing as an actor because I had become a bit bored with myself.”

Waititi also spoke about the new “cosmic” and colorful visuals in Thor: Ragnarok. Furthermore, the director went on to reveal that the changes were inspired from the comics.

“The look is inspired a helluva lot by Jack Kirby and his art,” said Waititi. “I loved the kind of cosmic trippy vibe of the Thor comics. I’ve often said if Freddie Mercury were alive, I would have asked Queen to do the soundtrack. The movie just has that feel: It’s a cool, bold, colorful cosmic adventure.”

Earlier in March, Hemsworth, Cate Blanchett and Thompson were on the cover of the EW. the issue also features an exclusive first look at Thor: Ragnarok.

Fans can grab EW’s special double issue now on newsstands or buy a digital copy of the magazine. Earlier yesterday, a new concept art from Justice League was also shared from the Fall Movie Preview issue.
