Top Gun: Maverick Gets Christopher McQuarrie On Board To Do Additional Script Work

Mission: Impossible Fallout actor-director team of Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are collaborating once again, but, this time for Top Gun: Maverick.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, Cruise revealed that McQuarrie has reportedly been roped in to do a little additional script work on the highly-anticipated sequel to his classic ’80s movie, Top Gun, which propelled the then 24-year-old Cruise onto stardom.

The film’s main script is already done with writers Peter Craig, Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, Justin Marks and Eric Warren Singer all credited with having worked on the movie’s script.

The two worked together for the first time on the 2008 drama Valkyrie, which McQuarrie wrote, and then he wrote The Tourist for Cruise before the actor dropped out from the film, he went on to write and direct Cruise’s Jack Reacher.

McQuarrie was brought on the board to do some uncredited work on Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol screenplay. He also wrote and directed Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Fallout. McQuarrie has even written for Valkyrie, Edge of Tomorrow, and The Mummy. Interestingly, Top Gun: Maverick will be the 10th movie that McQuarrie has collaborated with Cruise.

Cruise and McQuarrie’s last release Mission Impossible: Fallout has grossed a whopping $1.1 billion worldwide so far.

Top Gun: Maverick has been in the works for a long time. It was originally set for a 2019 release but was recently delayed to summer 2020. While details on the film currently remain unknown, the film’s story will follow Pete “Maverick” Mitchell teaching a new generation of pilots.

Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski is helming Top Gun: Maverick which stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Thomasin McKenzie, Charles Parnell, Jay Ellis, Bashir Salahuddin, Danny Ramirez, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris.

The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 26, 2020.
