The fan-favorite actor Tom Hardy brought Eddie Brock and his alien symbiote to life in Venom. The film has already grossed a whopping $853 million at the worldwide box office.
The filmmakers undoubtedly used the best visual effects technology to showcase the Spider-Man’s archnemesis Venom on the big screen, almost similar to the character from the pages of Marvel comic books.
During a recent interview with ComicBook, VFX Supervisor Paul Franklin, who worked with his team at DNEG to give a life to Venom, revealed what went into creating the character. He revealed that during the process the VFX team took inspiration from several different styles of the character from the comics series released over the years.
“You know, we looked at all the comics series,” Franklin said. “We looked at, a lot obviously, Lethal Protector, which was a big inspiration for the film in general, and that gave us something to work from. We also spent a lot of time looking at Venom: Dark Origin, a more recent interpretation of Venom. And, that is to say, what we responded to though, was the ever-changing, dynamic nature of the character.”
Franklin revealed that while they took inspiration from various character designs from the past, they chose to adopt a fresher look for Venom, which was different from the character’s two-dimensional comic book look.
“But ultimately, you have to let the thing be a little bit of its own thing for the screen, because what works on a comic book page, style-wise, ostensibly two-dimensional universe, doesn’t necessarily work when you transform it into an image that’s on the screen,” Franklin added.
Director Ruben Fleischer’s Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Woody Harrelson, Sope Aluko, Scott Deckert, Marcella Bragio and Michelle Lee. Venom, which is currently available on Digital, will be available for purchase on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on Tuesday, December 18.
