A War Machine Movie Was Initially Approved, Says Black Panther Writer

Marvel Studio’s Black Panther is already getting a lot of positive reviews and good ratings ahead of its official release. The film would have almost lost the title of being the first black superhero film if Marvel Studios’ plan of making War Machine was put in place at the right time. In fact, they had considered Don Cheadle for playing the lead role in War Machine.

Notably, Terrance Howard portrayed the character of James Rhodes in Iron Man. Don Cheadle got to suit up as War Machine in Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War and now in the upcoming  Avengers: Infinity War.

In conversation with Complex, Black Panther screenwriter Joe Robert Cole revealed all about how he was introduced to Marvel’s writer program. Interestingly, he was asked to join the Marvel’s writer’s program to develop the story of a potential War Machine solo movie which never went on floors.

I had written a Chinatown-style cop script and they met with me about it,” Cole revealed.  “At that meeting, they also said they were thinking of doing a War Machine movie. I pitched a concept and won that job to write the script but they decided, based on what Iron Man 3 was going to be, they weren’t going to do War Machine anymore. But they asked if I’d be interested in joining their writer’s program instead.”

The fan-favorite Iron Man’s supporting character James “Rhodey” Rhodes is also a complicated character that deserves his own solo film. The film, if ever made, would likely explore the militaristic side of the character that’s typically been sidelined.

Considering the fact that a number of film ideas don’t always make it to the big screen, it remains unconfirmed if we will ever get to see a War machine movie. However, the possibilities of a War Machine movie getting a green light in future cannot be ruled out completely, especially if Black Panther gets as successful as it’s poised to be.
