If a recent report is to be believed Warner Bros. is currently looking out for a director for Birds of Prey movie. The project will be DC’s first attempt at an all-female centric movie with Margot Robbie reprising as Harley Quinn after playing the role in 2016’s Suicide Squad.
According to a report from The Wrap, the film studio is pretty pleased with the script compiled by Christina Hodson. So, now the makers are in search of a good director to helm the project. Considering the success of Wonder Woman, it won’t be a surprise to see Warner Bros. lining up multiple female-led projects. There’s currently no information on who the filmmakers are eyeing at for the director’s post.
Talking more about Birds of Prey, The film won’t be a Harley Quinn solo movie. In fact, it would feature multiple female superheroes and possibly villains in the DC Comics universe. It is rumored that Birds of Prey could be WB’s attempt to make an all-female superhero team-up movie to beat Marvel. It will be interesting to find out which of the characters is part of the superhero team.
Notably, the news that WB is looking for a director doesn’t necessarily mean that the film is going to be made anytime soon. The film studio has already hired directors for a number of DC related projects and several of them are still in development. Birds of Prey will notably be the fourth Harley Quinn movie to get a director, the other three being David Ayer’s Gotham City Sirens, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s Harley vs The Joker, and Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2.
The same report from The Wrap suggests that Hodson has also been hired to pen down a script for Batgirl movie. The film will focus on the story of Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City’s police commissioner James Gordon. Christina Hodson’s previous works include Shut In and Unforgettable and the upcoming Transformers prequel/spinoff, Bumblebee, which is due out in theaters in December.
Though there are several projects at work, it is possible that these movies won’t necessarily be moving ahead as fast we expect. Similar to the rest of the spinoff project such as Nightwing, Warner Bros. main priority lies in establishing Justice League character with solo films. Currently, all eyes are on Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
Fans must also note that Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn played a huge part in the success of Suicide Squad. Although the film suffered in the hands of critics, it was still a financial success for the studio. It would only be a sensible move for the studio to push a project that is
Birds of Prey does not have a release date as of yet.
