WGA members react to Writers Strike potentially ending after 5 months, Daredevil showrunner, Suits series creator & more praise victory over tentative agreement

The AMPTP has finally yielded to come to terms with the WGA’s requirements & sign a new contract that could end the 146-day Writers Strike which began in May. Both parties have reached a tentative agreement but the strike has still not ended. Even so, Hollywood’s major studios agreeing in principle to the writer’s demand for protection from AI, streaming residuals & other points are being seen as a cause for celebration by showrunners, actors & fellow writers from the industry.

While the Writers are still on strike, members of the union have begun signaling the positive outcomes of the recent development. Craig Mazin is one of them, who confirmed that the Last of Us season 2 will resume work immediately after the strike halts. Jon Hurwitz also assured the writers room for Cobra Kai season 6 would get back to writing when they receive word from the guild.

UPDATE: The WGA strike has ended with the board voting unanimously to recommend the agreement.

The WGA has sent out emails to the union members on reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP though they await a final contract language. later, the guild members will be notified to vote Yes or No to the agreement.

WGA members were spotted celebrating their victory at Idle Hour in NoHo, thanking the negotiating committee for reaching a tentative agreement with AMPTP. Netflix’s Daredevil showrunner Steven DeKnight, one of the vocal supporters of the long strike also expressed gratitude to the leadership while reminding that the ratification still remains. Prominent voices like Adam Conover also echoed the celebratory sentiment in a post on X. Others like Suits creator Aaron Korsh also chimed in with a cryptic post teasing a potential announcement in Winter.

A few like 13 Reason Why writer Helen Shang reminded all that the WGA is still technically on strike although picketing was suspended. So no members have been authorized to work yet. Shang, a strike captain during the picketing is expected to begin her penning duties on the IT spin-off, Welcome to Derry when it begins filming post-strike.

While some folks expect to see projects like Stranger Things 4 resume filming since it halted production due to the WGA strike, it should be noted the SAG-AFTRA are still picketing and are yet to return back to the negotiating table. With actors barred from returning to work, projects such as Deadpool 3 are still on hold.

Some Hollywood actors also extended their commendations over the “long overdo” deal, as Kirk Acevedo noted on X. The Arrow star was one of the staunch supporters of the strike, even going as far as harshly condemning Stephen Amell for his controversial remark on picketing.

The Writers Guild of America board and its council will engage in voting on the new deal on Tuesday, September 26 if the contract is finalized. If approved, the deal will be sent out to the WGA members for a Yes or No answer.

Meanwhile, WGA has extended its support to SAG-AFTRA by instructing their members not to engage in work, in solidarity to the Actors Strike. The studios have not returned to bargain over the 73-day-long picketing.
