Warner Bros. and DC Films have a lot of movies in the pipeline, but, this doesn’t necessarily mean that each of the films will see the light of the day. After the release of Suicide Squad in 2016, rumors of a Deadshot standalone movie started making rounds. But, as there was no information on the project since then, fans began wondering if the plans have been scrapped.
Well, thankfully now, actor Will Smith, who portrayed the character of Floyd Lawton / Deadshot in 2016 released Suicide Squad, finally has some update on his assassin character’s standalone movie.
On Tuesday, Smith celebrated his 50th birthday in a YouTube live video streaming his bungee jump from the Grand Canyon. When one of his fans asked him if a Deadshot standalone movie will ever get made, the actor replied he is already having meetings with the studio for the project.
“I sure hope so. I love playing Deadshot,” Will Smith responded. “I really enjoy that character. They have been talking about it, so if a good idea comes around – we have been having meetings – but I would love to. I love Deadshot.”
Smith is also expected to play Deadshot in Suicide Squad 2 alongside Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. The sequel film has reportedly been delayed to make way for the upcoming Birds of Prey film.
During a recent interview with Discussing Film, Suicide Squad 2 co-writer Todd Stashwick discussed the status of the script. Stashwick is co-writing the script with David Bar Katz and The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor set to direct.
“We have finished our draft and I’m really proud of it,” but the writer refrained to offer any further detail about the film’s plot specifics or even who will be in the sequel.
“It’s a sequel to the first film,” Stashwick said. “Again, I can’t say anything else. Our intention is to tell an exciting story, deepening these characters.”
