It seems Warner Bros. and DC’s hunt for a probable actor to portray the villainous role of Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2 might have just ended in Saturday Night Live fame Kristen Wiig. According to a report coming from Deadline, the film studio is in talks with Wiig for the role of Cheetah in the Wonder Woman sequel. Notably, the role was previously offered to Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone, but the actress turned down the opportunity.
The villainous character Cheetah was first introduced in the Wonder Woman comics back in 1943. She has appeared in four incarnations over the past 75 years – Priscilla Rich, Deborah Domaine, Barbara Ann Minerva and Sebastian Ballesteros. If finalized for the role, Wiig will be seen playing Barbara Ann Minerva who is a British anthropologist who takes the avatar of a super-powered Cheetah-Human hybrid after mistakenly finding her way into an ancient ritual.
Wiig is best known for her roles in comedies like Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters and Paul. She also appeared on Saturday Night Live from 2005 through 2012. If selected, Wonder Woman 2 would mark her first role in the comic-book realm.
Wonder Woman 2 is a very special film for Warner Bros. and DC as it’s a sequel to the highly successful 2017 film Wonder Woman which did very well both in terms of commercial performance, and critical acclaim. The film studio is expecting to repeat the success with the sequel, so, they don’t want to leave any stone unturned.
Charles Roven, the producer of DC Extended Universe’s Wonder Woman, recently confirmed that the makers are currently busy developing the screenplay of the film.
Wonder Woman 2 will be set against the ’80s background and will take place during the end of the Cold War. The plot of the film is still very much under wraps. Directed by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 2 will hit theaters on November 1, 2019. Gal Gadot will be seen reprising the role of Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Ewen Bremner as Charle and Said Taghmaoiu as Sameer.
