Writers Explain Adam Warlock’s Exclusion From ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

The wait for Avengers: Infinity War is just on the verge of getting over. While fans already have a good idea of the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters who are going to make it to the film, there’s one character from the Marvel comics who despite being having a strong connection with the Infinity Gauntlet, could not make it to the final cut. It’s none other than Adam Warlock.

Warlock is the guardian of the Soul Stone in the Marvel comics. He has also wielded the Infinity Gauntlet. In fact, Warlock is the one who led the battle against Thanos in The Infinity Gauntlet comics on which Avengers: Infinity War is based.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, when Infinity War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were asked if they ever considered introducing any other character from the comic book in the film, they took Adam Warlock’s name.

Well, there are some in the original Infinity Gauntlet series that are– Like, we didn’t introduce Adam Warlock, because it’s a massive backbend and you practically have to make an Adam Warlock movie to introduce him,” Markus said.

He explained that as Infinity War was already too densely packed with superheroes, they thought it would be unfair to introduce Warlock’s arc in the film.

He just can’t walk onscreen,” the screenwriter added. “So, there was a brief moment where we were like, Ehhh…, and then we were like– [He points to the movie’s poster.] We have that many characters already!

Markus revealed that at one point, Infinity War‘s script also included Silver Surfer. But, they finally didn’t introduce the giant snake creature in the film. Adam Warlock character is expected to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is s e to release in 2020.

In an earlier interview, the screenwriters also revealed that they initially discussed the inclusion of Lady Death in Avengers: Infinity War. It has led some fans to believe that the character might appear in the final movie of Phase 3, Avengers 4.

Avengers: Infinity War is hitting theatre screens on April 27th.
