‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Actor Oscar Isaac Explains His Struggle Playing Apocalypse Character

Actor Oscar Isaac, who portrayed the villainous ancient mutant En Sabah Nur / Apocalypse in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, has revealed that the process of getting into the avatar on the set was quite “excruciating.”

During a recent interview with GQ, Isaac said he had no idea while he signed X-Men: Apocalypse that he would have to remain encased in glue, latex and wear a heavy 40-pound suit all the time while filming.

Apocalypse, that was excruciating,” he said to GQ. “I didn’t know when I said yes that that was what was going to be happening. That I was going to be encased in glue, latex and a 40-pound suit — that I had to wear a cooling mechanism at all times.”

Isaac revealed that while he was quite excited to get an opportunity to work alongside renowned performers like Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and James McAvoy, he did not get a chance to get along with them or even see them due to his heavy costume that restricted him from even moving his head. With the costume on, the actor was almost isolated as he was forced to sit only on a specially designed saddle.

I was like, ‘oh, I get to work with these great actors that I like so much,’ but I couldn’t even see them because I couldn’t move my head,” the Apocalypse added. “And I had to sit on a specially designed saddle, because that’s the only thing I could really sit on, and I would be rolled into a cooling tent in-between takes.”

He also recalled how he struggled to move around the set wearing the high heels inside of the boot. On top of that, the process of getting off the costume was even much more time-consuming.

And every time I moved, it was just like rubbers and plastic squeaking, so everything I said had to be dubbed later as well,” Isaac explained. “And then getting it off was the worst part, because they just had to kind of scrape it off for hours and hours.”

The next X-Men movies in line for release are Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants. Both the films are scheduled to release next year.
