X-Men: Dark Phoenix Director Teases Extraterrestrial Characters Inclusion

It is likely that the upcoming X-Men film dubbed X-Men: Dark Phoenix will step on to the cosmic stage with the inclusion of extraterrestrial characters.

Entertainment Tonight got the chance to speak to X-Men: Dark Phoenix writer-director Simon Kinberg at the Deadpool 2 premiere. During the interview, Kinberg revealed that the tone of the new X-Men installment would be less grounded and “a little less operatic” than the other X-Men movies. He also said that the film is “more intense, and it’s more real and grounded, and hopefully more relatable.”

The director said that the upcoming film will be more connected to the original comic book plot than X-Men: The Last Stand‘s attempt at the Dark Phoenix comic saga.

It’s much more loyal to the original comic than X-Men 3, which told the Dark Phoenix story,” Kinberg said.

Kinberg also revealed that the X-Men: Dark Phoenix will feature extraterrestrial characters, which has not been seen in any other X-Men franchise film before.

It’s a movie that involves extraterrestrial characters, which is not something that we’ve done in the X-Men franchise before, and is something that is a huge part of the Dark Phoenix saga in the comics,” the director said.

It will be quite interesting to see how Dark Phoenix turns out as the film is reported to undergo extensive reshoots and additional photography.

Set in 1992, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set ten years after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse. The film is based on the X-Men’s most iconic storyline, “The Dark Phoenix Saga” that revolves around Jean Grey as she struggles to control and succumbs to the Phoenix Force within.

The film stars James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Raven Darkholme/Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy/Beast, Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Monroe/Storm, Evan Peters as Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver, Jessica Chastain as Smith, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, and Olivia Munn as Psylock.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is currently scheduled to release on February 14, 2019.
