The news of the highly popular Watchmen comic book series getting a live-action TV series adaptation on HBO has a received a mixed response from the fanbase. While many have had their reasons, it is truly the right time for the series to come to fruition. but in 2009, Watchmen film director Zack Snyder didn’t seem to agree with the idea.
A Reddit user BeenTryin has posted an old video of Snyder explaining why he thinks Watchmen wouldn’t work as a mini-series during a Q&A session in 2009. In the video, he claims that it impractical to spend heavy on special effects cost for Dr. Manhattan. He added that the CGI alone would eat up the entire budget for an episode of the show.
“This is a question that has been brought up a lot about ‘oh, it should be an HBO miniseries’ or whatever which I think is cool, but you know it’s like in order…there’s no version of this movie where, no HBO miniseries version of Manhattan like that, can’t do it, I mean it’s just like impractical,” Snyder says in the video. “They’d never spend…each shot of him would be like your budget for an episode of the show.”

Well, the video is two years before HBO premiered Game of Thrones, which has completely transformed the television landscape. Making high-budget television shows has become a new norm now. While a Watchmen television series wouldn’t have been practical to make a decade ago, the idea definitely makes sense today.
Damon Lindelof’s upcoming Watchmen television series will reportedly takes place after the events of the book. According to HBO’s press release, the show’s star cast includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Tim Blake Nelson, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Adelaide Clemens, Tom Mison, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Adelynn Spoon, and Lily Rose Smith.
The new Watchmen TV series is currently scheduled to debut on HBO in 2019.
