Zack Snyder’s Pitch Convinced ‘Aquaman’ Star Amber Heard To Play Mera

Amber Heard made her first brief appearance as Mera in 2017 released Justice League. She is reprising the role again in the standalone Aquaman film alongside Jason Momoa playing the titular underwater superhero.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Heard recalled how she agreed to essay the role of the Atlantean princess Mera after Justice League director Zack Snyder convinced her that her role will be of a strong female character and not a damsel in distress.

I’m allergic to being the damsel, the two-dimensional archetype of what women are often limited to in this industry, especially in the superhero world,” Heard said. “Zack got me at ‘warrior queen’. He said, ‘You get a sword and a crown,’ and I’m like, ‘Okay.’”

Basically, Heard’s role as Mera will be pretty much of a co-lead as the Warrior Queen of Atlantis and not just a love interest to Aquaman. EW recently released some exclusive Aquaman pictures featuring the first look at Mera’s new costume.

In the upcoming film, Aquaman will be seen battling with his ambitious half-brother villain King Orm aka Ocean Master.

While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Orm actor Patrick Wilson explained the main reason for his character’s tiff with his half-brother Aquaman. Wilson said Orm wants to declare a war in the film against the surface world for constantly polluting the oceans for centuries, but Arthur Curry is against this idea.

He’s kind of an eco-warrior,” Wilson said. “He’s got a very clear gripe with the surface world, which has been polluting his oceans for centuries. And that’s something for me — I’m sure for you too — that’s very easy to understand. If somebody was just constantly polluting our air and ruining how we lived…

Director James Wan has already confirmed that the first Aquaman trailer will be released at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 next month. The trailer was recently showcased exclusively for CineEurope 2018 attendees in Barcelona, Spain.

You can have the first look at the fantastical underwater world of Aquaman in the newly released picture below.

The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2018.
