The upcoming Avengers: Infinity War is expected to make the audience go searching for tissues as a few fan favorite characters will meet their end in this movie. While at present it remains a mystery, there is one possibility that suggests that the character deaths in the threequel won’t be permanent. Or At least it presents the studio an opportunity to cheat their way at any point to bring dead characters back to life.
The time stone, which is currently in Doctor Strange’s possession, can alter time and space. This does beg the question if a possible death of several characters in Avengers: Infinity War won’t really be an emotional moment or arc to savor as it could easily be taken away from the fans. But fortunately, it looks like the stakes are real in the movie.
During an interview with Comingsoon.net, Screenwriter Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were asked about the “ground rules” set to make sure the stakes are real. Here’s what they had to say.
“That is a really good question. We were completely cognizant of that,” said Markus. “One of our missions was to have real stakes, real consequences and if God forbid somebody dies they were dead. We know what you mean, and we don’t want to BS through some of the more emotional moments and then take emotional moments back.”
“Sometimes you invent rules,” said McFeely. “Sometimes you have to be careful you’re not giving anyone ultimate power too quickly. Stories need stakes, and you can’t always tie your hands behind your back.”
Both screenwriters were also asked if their decision to bid farewell to characters in Infinity War were based on actors whose contract were close to expiring.
“(laughs) No no no! Again, this is a group decision,” said McFeely. “Chris and I sorta start the ball rolling and we say, “Listen, if you go down this path this is the natural conclusion to this character’s arc. This is a possible conclusion to their arc, etc.” Marvel will weigh in and say, “That sounds great. That’s a good story point,” or “We have other plans for this person” or “That seems too harsh” or what have you.”
“We always do it if the story needs you to do it,” said Markus. “Never to, “Hey! This movie needs gravitas, let’s kill somebody,” or “Let’s take away their powers.” It’s always because the story got to that point and the only way to honestly resolve the situation is to do X.”
Earlier, the Russo Brothers also spoke highly about the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and stated that the film has the most intense emotional realism. While some fans have been doubtful on Marvel’s effort to deliver on those terms, it looks like the threequel has gone the extra mile to present fans with the best emotional arc by far.
Avengers: Infinity War lands in theatres this Friday, April 27th.
