Even after two weeks of official release, Marvel Studios’ mega-blockbuster film, Black Panther, is still going strong at the box office. While the film is not eligible to be included in the Academy Awards nomination for this year, it has still managed to dominate the big award show in some way or the other.
Jimmy Kimmel, who is hosting the Academy Awards 2018, joked about Black Panther’s massive box office success saying that they were all present at the show to celebrate the movies that have already been crushed at the box office by the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Black Panther. The entire Black Panther cast grinned widely at the joke. You can check out the video below.
Also, during the black and white video opening for the Oscars telecast, when Chadwick Boseman was shown walking the red carpet, a voiceover referred to him as the king of Wakanda.
“There’s Chadwick Boseman, the king of Wakanda!” the voiceover said. “Imagine that! A country with a black leader. Wouldn’t that swell?”. But the video has been removed from YouTube for some undisclosed reasons.
Talking about Black Panther’s box office collections, the film has garnered a worldwide gross of $897.7 million in less than three weeks of its release. The film is close to become the fifth Marvel Cinematic Universe film to cross the $900 million mark, the first four being- The Avengers which grossed a total of $1.52 billion, Avengers: Age of Ultron with $1.4 billion, Iron Man 3 with $1.2 billion and Captain America: Civil War with $1.15 billion. Notably, the film has become 47th highest grosser worldwide.
While Black Panther fell outside of time frame for this Academy Awards, it is speculated that the film will definitely shine in next year’s Oscars.
Starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and Angela Bassett in lead roles, Black Panther is now playing in theaters.
