Wreck-It Ralph featured Bowser, the antagonist of many of Mario’s adventures, however, there was no Mario to be found. The same will be the case with Ralph Breaks the Internet, which will also not feature a Mario cameo, sadly.
During an interview with Inside the Magic, story artist on the project, Jason Hand, confirmed that the little Italian plumber will not be making an appearance in Ralph Breaks The Internet as the studio could not get rights to the fan-favorite character.
“Some of the stuff was that we don’t have rights to certain characters because we’re working in a world of other people’s media,” Jason revealed. “It’s like, that would have been really funny if we could have Mario [from Nintendo’s Super Mario games] in here doing this part, but it doesn’t end up working out because of that, and it’s fine and the story doesn’t actually end up needing it. But as individual bits, it’s like “That’s a great ‘Saturday Night Live’ bit!” Rich [Moore] and Phil [Johnston, the movie’s co-directors] are pretty much full of those things so it’s an endless amount of great ideas, honestly.”
Ralph Breaks the Internet will reportedly feature a scene in which Sarah Silverman’s Vanellope will meet almost all of the Disney Princesses including Rapunzel (Mandy Moore), Ariel (Jodi Benson), Moana (Auli’i Cravalho), Mulan (Ming-Na Wen), Elsa (Idina Menzel), Merida (Kelly Macdonald), Kristen Bell (Anna), Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), and Linda Larkin (Jasmine) in an epic slumber party. The film will also feature Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot voicing the character of Shank.
Written and directed by Phil Johnston, Ralph Breaks the Internet will arrive in U.S. theaters on Nov. 21, 2018.
