It seems work on Edge of Tomorrow 2 is already in progress, at least according to writer Christopher McQuarrie. The 2014 sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow, which revolved around Tom Cruise’s Bill Cage, performed well at the worldwide box office grossing $370.5 million against a $178 million production budget. The positive review from fans as well as critics is what paved the way for a sequel, currently titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat.

McQuarrie recently hosted a Q&A session on his Twitter account over the weekend. When a fan asked the filmmaker if a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow was ever going to happen, he said work on the film is currently going on, but, he has no idea when it will start taking shape.

“We’re working on it,” McQuarrie said. “No idea how or when it will happen.”

It was reported that director Doug Liman, who is expected to return to direct the follow-up, had begun work on Edge of Tomorrow 2 in the summer of 2017. In fact, the sequel’s first script was completed last October. But earlier this year, Emily Blunt, who starred alongside Cruise in the first film, confirmed that the script is going through rewrites and that there’s another script in the works.

“Doug Liman has got an awesome idea and he’s excited and they just need to write it,” Blunt told IndieWire. “There has been a script, but now I gather there’s another one in the works.”

Liman also revealed during an interview with Collider that he has been working on the Edge of Tomorrow 2 script along with Jez Butterworth. Furthermore, in July this year, when a Twitter fan asked McQuarrie about the status of the Edge of Tomorrow sequel, he revealed that a second script was in the works and that the project will only move forward with the studio approving the script and actor/director availability.
