Paramount Pictures and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions are reportedly working on a Captain Planet Movie, which will be a big screen adaptation of the hit ’90s animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
The cartoon show created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner followed a group of five young people from around the world who are granted five magical rings from Gaia, the spirit of the Earth. Each ring corresponds to one of the five elements- earth, wind, fire, water, and space. When in need, the Planeteers combine the powers of the five rings to summon a superhero known as Captain Planet.
Set It Up star Glen Powell is currently co-writing the Captain Planet movie script along with Jono Matt (Sons of Anarchy).
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell revealed that Captain Planet was one of his favorite cartoon shows during his childhood. He explained the reason why previous attempts on making the film failed.
“I mean they’ve tried to make it into a superhero movie before, but they kind of did like an earnest take and ours is way more subversive and fun and like dark and irreverent,” Powell said.
He said that following the same superhero movie format as Marvel or DC won’t do the work for the Captain Planet movie.
“Sometimes you have to think of these things logically,” Powell added. “If you have a blue superhero with a green mullet, you can’t do like an earnest take on that. You have to go at it from a fun [direction].”
Talking about the challenges as a screenwriter, Powell said he is enjoying the process.
“It’s been an interesting process and it’s taken a long time but now we’re getting that up and going and we’re really stoked about it,” he said.
The Captain Planet movie has no director or cast members attached yet. More details about the film are expected to come out soon.
