It seems James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli is very keen in casting Luther and Thor star Idris Elba as the superspy in future movies. Obviously, that will likely happen only when Daniel Craig is done with his last outing as Agent 007 in Bond 25. The film is expected to begin production at Pinewood Studios sometime later this year.
Elba’s name has been attached to James Bond’s role from a long time ago. It all began back in 2014 when emails released during the massive Sony hack revealed that then-studio co-chairman Amy Pascal was in favor of getting Daniel Craig replaced by Idris Elba in future James Bond movies.
During a recent interview with The Daily Star, director Antoine Fuqua mentioned about a conversation that he had with Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli. Fuqua said that Broccoli disclosed to him “it is time” to recast Bond with a non-white actor.
“Fuqua discussed who might be next in the running with Broccoli, who’s certain the progressive move “will happen eventually”, with Idris Elba a reported frontrunner for the role,” the report read.
Fuqua hinted that Elba could eventually be one of the best candidates for the role, saying, “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with a physically strong presence. Idris has that.”
Readers are advised to take the information with a grain of salt as it comes from word of mouth through Fuqua rather than from Broccoli herself.
Talking more about Bond 25, the film will be directed by Danny Boyle from a script by John Hodge. With Daniel Craig reprise his super spy role, Helena Bonham Carter is rumored to play the villain in the film.
Bond 25 is currently scheduled to arrive in theatres on November 8, 2019.
