The first trailer for Shazam! that was rolled out last week at Warner Bros. Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 received good response from the audiences. Now director David F. Sandberg has shared one of the earliest storyboards that he did on the film to give an idea of how one of the film’s best moments was first imagined and then finally shot.
For those unaware, a storyboard is a sequence of drawings representing the shots planned for a television production or film. Sandberg’s storyboard offers a side-by-side comparison of how Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) transformation into Shazam (Zachary Levi) was initially planned and then how it finally came out to be on screen.
“One of the first storyboards I did for Shazam! (Before we hired professionals storyboarders). I thought that this could be a moment they put in the trailer and now, 10 months later, it is indeed in the trailer. It’s not my favorite Billy to Shazam transformation in the film though. Maybe that one will be in a future trailer,” Sandberg captioned the picture.
Sandberg also teases stating this is not his favorite Billy transformation and seems to hope that his favorite version would be included in one of the future trailers. You can check the post below.
Interestingly, the transformation scene teases a Christmas time setting for the film. Shazam! appears to be in a Christmas market where there are a lot of lights and festival decoration in the background.
Sandberg had discussed the film’s Christmas connection with Comic Book at last week’s SDCC event.
“It feels like a Christmas movie to me. It’s about family and finding your family, you have these orphans or foster kids… and Christmas is very much a family holiday, so it sort of ties it all together in that way,” Sandberg said.
Actor Zachary Levi, who plays Billy Batson’s alter ego in the film, said that Shazam! is inspired from Geoff Johns’ New 52 version which is also set during Christmas.
“[The New 52 version of Shazam!] was a Christmas story in that issue, so I think that’s gotta play something into it,” Levi said.
“Yeah, and that was the idea Geoff Johns had for that as well, that it’s a family holiday,” Sandberg added.
Shazam! is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 5, 2019.
