Fantastic Beasts 2: Zoe Kravitz On Leta & Newt’s Special Bond, New Still Of Actress

One of the things that Potter fans are excited for with the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel is getting to the bottom of Newt and Leta Estrange’s bond. In the first Fantastic Beasts movie, a brief conversation involving Newt and Queenie reveals that Scamander may have been more than just friends with Leta Lestrange in past.

New details spotted from EW’s Comic-con bonus issue seem to confirm that Newt and Leta were never in a relationship. But clearly there’s more to their bond and actress Zoe Kravitz who portrays the pure-blood Lestrange character has some answers for fans.

[Newt and Leta are] friends from child-hood when they went to Hogwarts. They have quite a special bond and she was always looked at as an outcast, just as Newt was. Now he’s come back into town and learns she’s become engaged to his brother, Theseus, so that’s an awkward situation,” explained Kravitz.

As expected, the word ‘Awkward’ did bring up the question if Newt and Leta were romantically involved. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the answer many fans would have expected.

I don’t think it ever went to that place. But Newt has so few friends and connections in his childhood, maybe in his mind it might have gone there? I don’t think it was ever acted upon. But it still feels like a betrayal,” said Kravitz.

Interestingly, the dialogue from the first Fantastic Beasts film which sparked speculations of Newt and Leta being romantically linked was also brought up. The actress was asked if Queenie dissing Leta as a “taker” not a “giver” was a fair judgment of the character.

I think that’s a bit of a harsh judgment!,” responded Kravitz. “Maybe Newt doesn’t vocalize what he feels and it looks like he’s getting walked on? Leta is a compassionate person, especially towards Newt. But she’s also a powerful person, a force, and that could become a problem between them,”

Along with this piece of interview, a new photo of Kravitz as Leta Lestrange was also released in the EW issue. Fans can check it out below and grab their issue on a newsstand or a digital copy to read up on the piece.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald will premiere in theaters on November 16, 2018.
