Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn assures no return for Yondu & explains why

Guardians of the Galaxy is one of those franchises in the Marvel cinematic universe to have introduced several fan-favorite characters that left lasting impressions on fans. Michael Rooker’s Youndu Udonta was certainly one among them. But it seems no miracle could ensure his return in the post-blip world.

A fan who recently rewatched the Guardians of the Galaxy films was all praises over Yondu’s Yaka Arrow. Although director James Gunn seemed to have a similar view, he shared regret losing the character early on.

Gunn was interjected by another fan pitching in to suggest that no character stays dead for too long except Uncle Ben from the Spider-man Universe. However, the director affirmed his stance on keeping Yondu dead in the MCU.

Gunn shot down any glim hope of seeing Yondu’s return in the MCU. In fact, resurrecting the beloved character by any means would be an insult to the emotional arc delivered in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, says the director. Readers can check out the tweet below.

The second installment from the GOTG saga was praised highly for displaying Yondu and Peter Quill/Star Lord’s (Chris Pratt) sentimental relationship as Father-son. In fact, the film won many hearts as a fun family-friendly flick with an emotional punch. Reversing any decision affecting Yondu’s final  arc would “belittle his sacrifice.”

Meanwhile, with Guardians of the  Galaxy Vol. 3 officially in pre-production, Gunn is back in the director’s chair, offering a teasing glimpse of the storyboard in a new BTS picture. An image of costume designer Judianna Makovsky holding on to the production office dog was shared along with Gunn confirming that the start of filming quickly approaches.

Expectations are high for the much anticipated Vol. 3 with the recent casting news of Will Poulter as Adam Warlock. Moreover, the main Guardians cast have also teased the third installment as  quite emotional after their script-read. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit theaters on May 05, 2023.
