From unveiling a 14-minute footage from Spider-Verse 2 at CinemaCon 2023 to showcasing a clip from the R-rated Kraven the Hunter movie with a tease for Rhino’s debut – Sony Pictures’ presentation at the cinema industry event was packed with exciting announcements. Prior to promoting their Marvel features – the studio head Tom Rothman kicked off the panel with Bad Boys 4 followed by an on-stage discussion on forthcoming titles. Here’s a brief highlight of Sony’s panel from Day 1.
CinemaCon 2023 has been buzzing with news since attendees spotted brand new posters for Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, Spider-Verse 2, Oppenheimer, Barbie, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One & more at the arena. But Day 1’s event was all about Sony Pictures’ upcoming line-ups.
The 2-hour presentation began with a video message featuring Bad Boys 4 cast Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The two stars had a funny gag with a reference to the Prosche from the 1995’s Bad Boys movie. The fourth film is currently in the fourth week of filming
First up was Dumb Money – an exclusive clip from the movie was showcased which stars Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, Vincent D’onofrio, and Pete Davidson to name a few. The feature is based on a true story with a The Big Short-Esque plot where characters played by Dano, a YouTuber and Rogen’s Gabe Plotkin are worth $400 million after their GameStop stock prices shoot up.
Next in line is Insidious: The Red Door and while new footage was shown teasing the return of the original characters, the preview was an extension of the trailer, said journalist Eric Goldman. Sony’s Josh Greenstein predicted Insidious 5 will be the best entry of the franchise.
Kraven is R-rated and features Aaron taylor-johnson’s Marvel character killing people in teaser
The Machine movie featuring Bert Kreischer in the lead had a peculiar yet uncanny teaser to show at CinemaCon. Kreischer is shown underwater wearing a Little Mermaid costume. The promo clip has been released for public viewing since the movie arrives on Memorial day.
Finally, it was time for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The cast namely Shameik Moore, Issa Rae and Hailee Steinfeld were in attendance. The 14-minute sequence was described by CinemaCon 2023 attendees as follows: Miles and Gwen are web-slinging across the city while discussing the Spider-Verse team.
The Spider-Verse 2 exclusive CinemaCon footage shows a scene where Spider-Gwen says, “In every universe, Gwen Stacy falls for Spider-Man and in every universe, it doesn’t end well” – this scene was earlier leaked by credible insider CanWeGetSomeToast.
There’s a time jump in Spider-Verse 2, Christopher Miller himself confirmed on Twitter that the sequel takes place “one year and four months” after the events of 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse. While the footage shows Gwen and Miles Morales bonding and teasing their romantic entanglement – it also teases Gwen is hiding something from Miles.

DUMB MONEY: @SethRogen plays Gabe Plotkin who's worth $400 million. Vincent D'Onofrio plays Steve Cohen, while Nick Offerman plays Ken Griffen, who's worth $29 billion. They're all freaking out as GameStop stock shoots up. Looks like THE BIG SHORT for Millennials. Could be a hit.

First preview of Insidious The Red Door. If the first movie was the beginning or part of the beginning of prestige horror, the latest installment looks much more like a bloody Stranger Things. #CinemaCon

Sony's Josh Greenstein says he thinks that INSIDIOUS: THE RED DOOR will be the most successful entry in the franchise, which has grossed over half-a-billion worldwide.
He makes this prediction because the original cast is back… and the movie is genuinely scary. #CinemaCon pic.twitter.com/nmvc9hZKlJ

If youāre a #GranTurismo fanā¦@SonyPictures is promoting the movie at #CinemaCon with a pretty cool set up. They were still setting up when I shot this. Not sure if this is just for CinemaCon or this will be at select movie theaters. pic.twitter.com/i0b4QVOya0

.@DavidKHarbour and Orlando Bloom take the stage to talk about their upcoming film @granturismo from @SonyPictures and @PlayStation Productions
— CinemaCon (@CinemaCon) April 25, 2023
I dug the GRAN TURISMO trailer, like a cross between a racing movie and REAL STEEL or something. It's wish fulfillment that's very much aimed at gamers and it looks fun, with Harbour training gamers for real racing. Visually, it looks expensive. Hopefully a return to form for NB.

First trailer for #GranTurismo movie looks really good. Itās based on a true story about a video game player who became a race car driver. #CinemaCon

Jason Reitman & Paul Rudd show up on video to remind theater owners that a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie is on the horizon. They also introduce Tom Rothman, who in past years has owned the CinemaCon stage like no other. Woman King, Man Called Otto, Crawdads… all performed well in '22.

NEW from #CinemaCon: Sony just screened the first footage from Ridley Scottās action-epic #Napoleon. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Napoleon – we watched a massive battle sequence where Napoleon surprises an attacking army w/ a vicious wintry assault. Looks real good. pic.twitter.com/om2ZzQ4Vmk

Sounds like we're about to see the NAPOLEON trailer. Rothman brings up the fact that Ridley has never won the Oscar for Best Director. [hint hint]

Sony ends their presentation at #CinemaCon with the first battle scene from Ridley Scottās #Napoleon, which could be a huge awards contender when it drops this Thanksgiving. Joaquin Phoenix stars as Napoleon. Craving a giant war epic. This oneās for you!

Kraven The Hunter takes it up a notch with a Red Band-style trailer shown at CinemaCon 2023 Day 1. The Kraven teaser description from journos in attendance reveals brutal sequences going up against a military convoy. Like Kraven biting a guy’s nose off and killing another with a javelin spear. A medieval hunting contraption is also used on a person whose face gets caught up.
The best takeaway was at the end of Kraven’s teaser which features a man injecting a serum into him as he transforms into Rhino. The role of Rhino is played by Alessandro Nivola. Aaron Taylor-Johnson also popped up via a video message before the footage premiered to say, “Will it be rated R? F*** yes it will be rated R.” It’s unclear
Kraven The Hunter teaser also has the tagline “No One Survives the Hunt.” Kraven received a positive response from a test screening in 2022, states insider Big Screen Leafs so it seems like Sony may have a Logan-Esque title on their hands if all goes well.
With the Marvel titles out of the way, the CinemaCon 2023 stage made way for Jennifer Lawrence‘s No Hard Feelings. The Hunger Games actor and the film’s R-rated Comedy director Gene Stupnitsky came on stage and showed an extended scene from No Hard Feelings that had audiences in laughter.
David Harbour and Orlando Bloom took the stage after the No Hard Feelings panel. The first trailer for the GranTurismo movie was shown and journalists like Steven Weintraub are already raving over the feature which is based on a true story about a video game player who becomes a race car driver.
Sony seems to be betting big on GranTurismo since an Arcade car racing game machine has been set up for play. Its unclear if this marketing tactic is particularly for CinemaCon 2023 Day 1 or the studio plans to have it at select movie theaters.
Next up was another R-rated title from the comedy genre – Anyone But You starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney. Anyone But You has wrapped filming today in Australia. The two stars were glammed up for their appearance at the Sony Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation. Variety’s reporter Rebecca Rubin revealed the two stars were fliring on stage while she described his characters as “a real asshole” and Powell calling her “a real nightmare”.
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon trailer teasing War scenes gets rave reactions at CinemaCon 2023 Day 1
Ghostbusters: Afterlife fans also got a little update on the sequel. Jason Reitman and Paul Rudd appeared on a video to remind theater owners the film’s release is on the horizon. Ghostbusters 4 is set in New York City and brings back the cast from Afterlife. āThe movie looks huge,ā said Sonyās Tom Rothman as noted by Erik Davis. Furthermore, Rudd and Carrie Coon also don the classic Ghostbusters uniform.
After the Ghostbusters presentation – Sony boss Tim Rothman showcased The Equalizer 3 after making a speech about the growing general belief in Hollywood that movie stars don’t matter anymore. “I really hope all my competitors believe that shit,” said Rothman according to Jeff Sneider. Denzel Washington later arrived on stage following a highlight reel of his career.
The Equalizer 3 trailer features brutal scenes like when Denzel’s character puts a gun barrel through a person’s eye. The third film is being promoted as “witness the final chapter”.
Lastly, Ridley Scott‘s Napoleon trailer was shown to the CinemaCon audience – an Apple TV+ title but would also receive ” a robust theatrical window” and a “full-throttle marketing campaign” assured Rothman. Sony’s head also mentioned Ridley Scott is yet to win an Oscar for best director – hinting that Napoleon as an Oscar contender.
The Napoleon trailer showed the first battle scene teasing its giant war epic setting. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon and is set to release this Thanksgiving.
While Venom 3 fans are utterly disappointed the threequel was a no-show at CinemaCon, there seems to be hope for the third installment to be R-rated since Sony has given the nod for Kraven.
CinemaCon 2023 Day 1: Here are the titles Sony Pictures did not discuss
Venom 3, Madame Web, Harold and the Purple Crayon, They Listen, The Book of Clarence, Journey to Bethlehem, Thanksgiving, Love Again and Knights of the Zodiac. It should be noted Sony will be releasing 23 movies in 2023 though not all of them were discussed at the event.
Meanwhile, the attention has now shifted to Warner Bros. DC Studios’ presentation and the showcasing of The Flash movie. Reporters at CinemaCon 2023 have also claimed that attendees will be allowed to tweet social media reactions. So readers are urged to stay tuned for more updates on Day 2 event.
